User Guide
Which used car should you buy?
When buying a used car, there needs to be a few considerations made. Such as:
- The cost of insurance
- Fiel Economy
- Potential cost of service
- Cost of tyre replacement
Diesel cars
Diesel cars are a great option for those who clock up a lot of motorway miles, due to a better fuel economy than a typical petrol engine.
Petrol Cars
Petrol engines cars have their own benefits too. Despite being, in general, slightly more expensive to run, they are quiter and offer better performance than their diesel counterparts.
Watch out for imports
Importing a car, or buying a car that has already been imported might well be a cheaper option, but beware. You may have trouble with any warranty connected with the car, and it can also have a negative effect upon your insurance premium.
What this essentially means, is that whilst the vehicle may appear a good deal on the surface, it may actually end up costing you more in the long run.
Understand your legal rights
It is important when buying a used car to understand your legal rights. This could be a lifeline should you run into any unfortunate problems.
The law states that any car you buy should meet certain standards when taking into account the vehicles age and mileage. Make note of how the car is described to you, as should you find there are contrasts between the car you bought and the car you thought you were buying, you may well have a claim against the dealer.
For example, if the car is described to you as having a 1.8 litre engine, but in reality it is only a 1.6 litre, you are well within your rights to return the vehicle to the dealer.
This is an increasing problem as many modern cars no longer have descriptive engine badges.
